Students, e-mentorship can facilitate your academic and professional growth. It allows UWI graduates to give you up-to-date professional and academic advice via email - and alumni from all over the world have already signed up to participate!

NOTE: Your questions are to be ACADEMIC OR PROFESSIONAL only, for example:

Academic - related to course content/ industry trends, cutting edge innovations in the field, useful articles, websites or research etc.
Professional - related to career guidance, life skills, project planning, advocacy and more. Also courses that can help your career, recommendations on conferences to attend, ideas on how/where to apply for internships, fellowships or jobs in your field etc.

Your UWI alumni E- Mentor will respond via email within 24 hours and is looking forward to assisting you!

Note: The advice given here is given freely by alumni, with the understanding that there is no guarantee that it will assist in the exact way you envisage. It is given by alumni based on what they have experienced in their various careers and expertise. PLEASE contact a maximum 2 or 3 graduates at a time, so that you get answers from graduates with different work experiences and perspectives you are provided with varied options and views and can make your own decision based on a broad spectrum of information but do not spam the system. CIBC now has an exclusive co-branded VISA credit card for UWI students, staff and alumni geared towards facilitating their professional and personal lifestyles.

UWI Visa Cardholders will benefit from this product by paying specially reduced annual fees and interest rates on each card product - Classic, Gold and Platinum. The card is currently available in Barbados and Jamaica but will soon be available regionally.

The UWI Visa Credit Card will also accommodate funding for the university's development, as every time an account is opened or renewed, AND every time the UWI Visa Credit Card is used to make a purchase, the UWI will be generating revenues to support its development.

For alumni, this card honours their academic achievements with valuable benefits and also benefits the University's development. Each time a cardholder makes a purchase with their UWI Visa Credit Card and every time an account is opened or renewed, the University will benefit financially, supporting its continued development.

NOTE: The UWI Visa Credit Card is available in Visa Classic, Gold and Platinum and offers many of the features and benefits which apply to each product.

Students will be given a Student Guide to the Wise Use of Credit Cards which will detail how to use the card responsibly. It will outline how to use the card as a financial tool, pitfalls commonly faced by students, helpful tips on how to use the card responsibly, and also give security pointers.

The UWI Regional Endowment Fund has been established to provide an independent source of funding for University programmes and to reduce dependence on government grants, student tuition and direct alumni donations. Over the long term, this fund will increase the strength, stability and independence of the University.

The UWIREF is not intended to replace existing campus endowment funds. Rather, it will widen the donor scope, by collaboratively soliciting donations and gifts regionally and internationally. The UWIREF will broaden opportunities for Units throughout the University to receive gifts based on merit and need as determined by the UWIREF's Board, rather than awards being primarily dependent on the wealth and economic circumstances of a contributing country.

Donors to UWIREF can designate a specific campus, Unit or project as a recipient. On an annual basis, the UWIREF will decide what portion of the proceeds from the Fund to allocate for disbursement for award of scholarships, projects or other initiatives and the remaining portion will be re-invested to enable the growth of the Fund.

A strong Alumni Association demonstrates pride in being a member of the UWI community. It preserves UWI traditions. It supports valuable programs for graduates, students and the University.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the UWI Alumni Association gives you a link to an outstanding professional organization and a valuable connection to other UWI graduates, a link which enables you to network in many spheres. UWIAA membership will also provide you with a direct connection to the University through dynamic, informative alumni publications, the Global UWI Alumni Hub, the Alumni Engagement Programme, E-mentorship and other programmes.

As a member of the UWIAA, you will also receive tangible benefits (discounts and special offers) through Pelican Perks.

The PELICAN PERKS ADVANTAGE PROGRAMME (PPAP) was ratified on April 26, 2019 by the University Council. Therefore as of Sept 1, 2019, there is one Life fee of US$30 (or the equivalent) across the globe for all UWI alumni.

Graduates will receive a Lifetime UWI Alumni Association (UWIAA) Card which will give them access to Pelican Perks. THE US$30 FEE can be paid ONLINE via ALUMNI ONLINE (AO) or directly to the Campus Alumni Officers.

Types of UWIAA Membership & Definition

UWIAA Membership

Annual or Life Membership - Any person who has been awarded a degree, licentiate, diploma or certificate in any Faculty of The UWI or of The University College of the West ̽��ϵ�� may apply. This is the only category eligible for nomination to Executive Positions and has full voting rights. All Main Campus and Open Campus certificates, diplomas and degrees, no matter the length of study, qualify an individual as a "graduate" and therefore make them eligible for this category of membership.

Associate Membership - Any person who has completed one academic year may qualify however this request will be taken to Council by the Alumnus Representative through the Institutional Advancement Division. These members do not have the right to hold executive office. Graduates of other recognized Universities may have Associate Membership.

Honorary Membership - Persons who hold Honorary Degrees from UWI qualify. Chapters may grant Honorary Membership. They may attend meetings but may not vote.

Group Membership - Alumni may form affiliated groups based on graduating class, disciplines, geographic area or other common characteristics. Such groups fall under the "umbrella" country chapter and may only be represented on the Central Executive Committee through their local "umbrella" chapters. They may operate independently however the President of the Group is automatically an Executive Member of the Campus Country Chapter. All such alumni groups and sub-groups MUST register with the Institutional Advancement Division (IAD) Office of the Vice Chancellor who will advise the Campus Country Chapter and enter them into the records of the University. Chapters who have not registered are not authorised to do so and not recognised by the UWIAA or the University.

REPLACEMENT UWIAA CARDS

If your UWIAA Life, Annual or Associate Membership card is lost or stolen you can replace it. Check with your local UWIAA chapter as replacement costs vary.

UWIAA Definitions

UWIAA Chapter: A recognized organization established under the umbrella of the UWIAA as outlined in the UWI Charter, consisting of alumni and friends living in geographic areas, associated with a particular faculty or having a shared interest. An Executive Committee and/or steering committee must be formed in order to be considered a Chapter.

UWIAA Contact: Individual volunteer(s) where there is no UWIAA Chapter. Serves as point of contact for the Institutional Advancement Division and Campus Alumni Officer and alumni traveling to the area, as well as a resource for UWI faculty and staff. The volunteer(s) may be called on to assist the IAD and/or Campus Alumni Officer in developing and coordinating activities for area alumni.
